Salgenreute Trilogy

Salgenreute Trilogy

The pieces shown are inspired by Salgenreute chapel* which stands in a field on a Vorarlberg hillside in western Austria.

The chapel’s perfect proportions and minimalist interior create a serene meditational space that encourages reflection and brings the peace sought by humans in a fast paced world.

In this tribute to Salgenreute Everywoman emerges, individual, golden and creative, to continue the journey of life with confidence..

Contemplation, Inspiration, Incubation

Contemplation, Inspiration, Incubation

Thoughts lead to ideas and concepts grow within the unknown interior.

These three pieces, made using heavily grogged terracotta clay, form chambers in which ideas grow and individuality develops.

The apertures represent the DNA that plays a crucial role in human development.

The facades are golden but the supporting walls are made of common clay forged by fire.

Guarded Space 3

Guarded Space 3

The golden but time-worn façade makes it difficult to assess the dark and mysterious interior. The perforations allow the viewer only limited access to the dark space within.

DNA Inheritance

DNA Inheritance

The outer facade is richly embellished yet it is also decayed and altered by the passage of time and the forces of nature. The base material is beginning to push through the gilding. Meanwhile the apertures speak of a huge genetic inheritance and provide brief glimpses of the interior.

There are more questions than answers.

Small Guarded Spaces

Small Guarded Spaces

Everywoman steps out of an environment fashioned from common clay and made using techniques that are essentially European. At one and the same time she is unimportant but also deeply significant- a small but essential part of the whole.

i have spent most of my working life making tableware using these materials hence working with terracotta clay, slips and glazes has a special resonance for me.

Guarded Thoughts

Guarded Thoughts

The wall-like towers suggest a fortified inner space, a home or a workplace, from which Everywoman/Everyman must emerge to engage with life.

Secrets, passions, lies and anxieties are left behind in the closely guarded inaccessible interior.
